What Old North Knoxville is built from
The Victorian district north of Fourth and Gill, along Broadway and the streets running off it, listed on the National Register and made up largely of 1890s to 1910s Queen Anne and folk Victorian houses on original heart pine and oak floors. A great many of them stood in poor condition for decades and are being brought back one room at a time.
Restorers, mostly, living in the middle of their own projects, plus a rented share along the main roads. Rugs here are a mixture of inherited pieces and things bought to suit a period house.
The Old North Knoxville problem
Living in a house that is being restored is the problem, and the material that does the harm is not the obvious one. Plaster repair and joint compound throw an extremely fine dust that stays airborne for hours and settles everywhere, and unlike ordinary soil it is alkaline. Once it is down in a wool pile it dulls the colour by scattering light, it holds on to the fibre far more stubbornly than dust does, and alkalinity is exactly what wool does not tolerate — left in place long enough it will shift some dyes. The other recurring find is the rug that got promoted to drop cloth for a weekend and never quite recovered: paint on the pile, gypsum ground into the base, and a fold that has been in it since. Roll the rugs out of the room before the work starts if you possibly can, and if it is already in them, it comes out in a wash rather than under a vacuum.
