What West Hills is built from
A large 1950s and 1960s subdivision west of Bearden, laid out around the West Hills golf course: brick ranches and split-levels on generous lots, built with oak strip flooring that in most of these houses spent thirty or forty years underneath wall-to-wall carpet before it was uncovered again.

The West Hills problem
The rug that turns up in West Hills has usually been somewhere else for twenty years, and where it was is written into it. A rug folded rather than rolled into an attic or a closet keeps the fold, and a fold is a hinge: the foundation flexes at that exact line under every footstep until it eventually splits, which is a reweave rather than a wash. Old moth grazing on the underside is common in the same rugs, because an attic is dark, still and undisturbed for years at a stretch, and larvae work from the back so the pile still reads as sound. The second thing is the floor. When wall-to-wall came up, the tack strip along every wall came up with it, and what is left is a perimeter of nail holes, staple stubs and old adhesive. A rug laid over that with no pad, or with a pad cut short, catches its selvedge on it and wears through at the edges long before anything happens in the field.
