What Sequoyah Hills is built from
Laid out from 1926 on the north bank of the Tennessee River, west of downtown, with Cherokee Boulevard running through the middle of it as a landscaped parkway down to the water. Large period-revival houses on deep lots — Tudor, Colonial and Mediterranean — on original oak floors, with the later Talahi and Kingston Pike edges filled in over the following decades.
Long-tenured households in houses that were furnished properly once and have not been rearranged since. This is where the genuinely good rugs in this city live: room-size antique Persians and Turkish carpets bought for a specific room in a specific decade, and still in it.
The Sequoyah Hills problem
The rugs here are old, large and have not moved in a very long time, and that last part is what does the damage. A twelve-by-eighteen with a piano on one corner and a sideboard on another has been carrying point loads in the same four places for thirty years, and under each of those the pile is crushed flat and the foundation has been held compressed against a hard floor with no air on either side. What follows is not wear, it is brittleness: cotton warps that have never been flexed or washed go dry and snap in a line when the rug is finally rolled. The second thing is light. These houses were built to look down the lawn at the river, so the principal rooms have tall south and west windows, and a Sequoyah Hills rug very often has one bleached band across it where the afternoon sun has landed for decades. Fading is not reversible and it is the one thing we are asked for most often and cannot give.
