What Westmoreland is built from
A small enclave of architect-designed modern houses built through the 1950s and 1960s in a wooded hollow off Lyons Bend and Westmoreland Drive, west of Sequoyah Hills. Flat and low-slope roofs, long glazed walls, open plans, built-in cabinetry, and floors that are as often concrete or terrazzo as they are wood.
Owners who bought the house for what it is and keep it that way. Furnishing tends to be deliberate and sparse, which means a single large rug is usually doing all the work in the main living space.
The Westmoreland problem
These houses were designed to bring the outside in, and a rug pays for that twice. The first cost is ultraviolet light: a wall of single-glazed or early insulated glass facing a wooded slope puts direct and reflected sun across the floor for most of the day, and it lands on the same strip of rug every day because nothing about the room can be changed. Madder red and indigo go first, and the line between faded and unfaded is sharp rather than gradual. The second cost is that the rug cannot be rotated. In a house full of built-in seating and cabinetry there is exactly one orientation the rug fits, so the traffic path, the sun band and the furniture legs stay locked in the same relationship for the life of the rug. Even wear is the whole point of rotating, and here it has to be replaced with washing on a schedule and a proper pad instead.
